Although it is stated in the County Waterford Heritage Plan (page 16) published on the 31st May 2006, that Waterford County Council will "continue to operate the Waterford Wildlife website" in partnership with the owner, please take note that Waterford County Council never had any act nor part with the creation or operation of this site, it has NO association with it and that no such partnership exists. In a reply received on the 26th June 2006, Waterford County Coucil stated that it would send an erratum to those who attended the launch. To the date shown at the top of this page, no notification has been received from the Council that this has yet been done.

A draft Local Biodiversity Plan has been prepared by Waterford County Council. This document now sets out an action plan for the future conservation of wildlife on the county.

The public are invited to make submissions to this plan which is available from local libraries, Heritage Office, Dungarvan Civic Offices, Tramore Civic Offices and the local authority website www.waterfordcoco.ie. Submissions should be received by 5.pm, Friday 07th March and addressed to - Bernadette Guest, Heritage Officer, Waterford County Council, Civic Offices, Dungarvan, Co. Waterford

Reports of sightings of a "Black Panther" in the Comeragh and Knockmealdown Mountains were broadcast in the national media today.

Bear in mind that similiar reports of "Large Cats" roaming the mountains also occurred in the 1960's, 1970's and 1980's - but these were never confirmed in any way.

The Waterford Branch of the Irish Wildllife Trust are organising an outing to Marrlfield Pond near Clonmel on the 20th January to see the wintering wildlfowl. Meeting place and car pool is at the Holy Cross pub on the Cork Roas just outside Waterford City. Further details from Denis Cullen 051 370 385. All are welcome!

A juvenile Robin ringed in a Watrford City garden on the 21st June 2004 was again trapped in the same place today.

A 6m round log (possibly part of an old ship's mast) washed ashore at Tramore Strand on Christmas Day, was festooned with in excess of 1,000 Goose Barnacles. In bygone days, theses barnacles were thought to be the eggs of black and white geese that were then named after them - the Barnacle Goose and the Brent Goose, Branta bernicla. These were then thought to be the male and female of the same species.

A number of recent reports are in of butterflies flying in houses or seemingly dead on window sills. These are hibernating Small Tortoiseshells confused by strong sunlight and heat from radiators into thinking that the Spring has sprung! These are not dead. Take them gently and put into a dark safe place (behind a wardrobe or under the bed). They will emerge when natural conditions are amenable and will fly away.

The Waterford Branch of the Irish Wildlife Trust will hold its AGM at the National Biodiversity Data Centre on Monday 22md October, 0730pm. This will be preceded by an address by members of the NBDC staff who will detail what the centre does and how it does it. This is open to the public and all are welcome. The venue is at Beechfield House, WIT West Campus at Carriganore just west of Waterford City.

A conferance of fieldworkers at the National Biodiversity Data Centre (NBDC) held at the Carriganore campus of WIT between the 22-23rd. August, found two hugely interesting soecies. Firstly, several specimens never before known to Ireland were trapped - the Barred Hooktip: and secondly, a red-data list species of bee, the Field Cuckoo Bumblebee - a species that is thought to be in decline in Ireland that is a first record for the County of Waterford .

Trapped in Waterford City today, a rare Carpenter Bee, Xylocopa violacea. This normally occurs in southern and eastern Europe.

This has now been confirmed as a species NEW TO IRELAND
