Golden Eagle image ack. to www.virginmedia.com |
Golden Eagles and White-tailed Eagles were shot and poisioned to extinction in Waterford in the late 19th century. Now, the Golden Eagle Trust has organised an online petition to show support for the reintroduction of Golden Eagles, White-tailed Eagles and Red Kites in Ireland and for efforts to stop illegal poisoning. If as many people as possible could take a minute to sign the petition and to forward it on to a couple of people who thay think might consider signing it, we could have a significant impact. Why should a nation be punished for the activities of a small few misguident farmers? The recent poisoning of such magnificent birds is impacting on Ireland's image abroad and may prevent source-countries from contributing nestlings to the reintroduction scheme. Click on Golden Eagle Trust above for the petition Many Thanks! |

The National Biodiversity Data Centre has now produced a dataset with interactive maps of the Butterflies of County Waterford. This is now available on its website. Navigating the site to get to the interactive species- maps and interacting with them can be frustrating when doing it for the first first and the enclosed instructions might help. This is the first map specifically for a county and as such is still being improved. Some maps may be a bit slow at times but they will come. If you zoom to a high resolution you will see satellite views of the habitat.
Note This facility was later removed from the site for technical reasons |
http://www.biodiversityireland.ie/ Click on link above to get to the site. Click on Map on home page. Click on Browse Datasets (If this page is too large for your screen, reduce the size to 75%). Click on Butterflies of County Waterford. Click on Species (Metadata Links LH side). Click on 'insect-butterfly'. Choose butterfly species and click on it. Click on Map. Accept Terms and Conditions - click on box and Agree. Ailing map by dragging with cursor. Goto Zoom In (first top LH icon). Click on map until desired size is achieved (when you can see 2km squares). Goto Hand icon and align map. **Goto Information icon (i). Click on desired 2km square for record details. Click on Designation (+) sign on RH menu for details. Click on Designation (-) to close details. Repeat for all Designations as desired. To changes species................ Goto Layers. Click on Red X to delete previous species. A number of recent reports are
in of butterflies flying in houses or seemingly dead on window sills.
These are hibernating Small Tortoiseshells confused by strong sunlight
and heat from radiators into thinking that the Spring has sprung! These
are not dead. Take them gently and put into a dark safe place (behind
a wardrobe or under the bed). They will emerge when natural conditions
are amenable and will fly away.
