On the first day of 2007, hundreds of Lapwing roosted on the island in the Tramore boating lakes together with Godwits and with Brent Geese, Ducks and Swans on the water. (See January 2006 below)

Reported over the past few days -

Dead Badger near Picardstown Cross on the Tramore Road - Male Sparrowhawk trying to stand on bullrushes at Castletown Fen - Ravens nesting in a tree at the Airport side of the causeway at Castletown Fen (these were also seen in th same place in 2005) a Buzzard at Moinamintra Cross on the Airport Road and a Turtle Dove at Creadan Head.

Recently published information on the wildlife of Waterford includes 'Records by the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group' of stranded cetaceans on the Waterford Coast for 2003 in the Irish Naturalists' Journal (Vol. 28 No5. p214) and a paper by Patrick Smiddy 'A previously undocumented breeding site for the Little Tern Sterna albifrons in County Waterford' in Irish Birds 7, 2005. In fact, this site is shown as a 'possible breeding' dot in the 1968-1972 'Atlas of breeding Birds of Britain and Ireland' published by the Irish Wildlbird Conservancy and the British Trust for Ornithology in 1976

Just reported from the Clashmore area - the Four Spotted Chaser shown here and the Emporor Dragonfly. Both are extensions to the known range of these insects in Waterford.

Waterford's newest mammal, a Bank Vole was found in a stunned condition on the Vee road outside Lismore at the weekend. It was carefully moved to roadside vegetation where it later recovered.

Aaeolid is the fancy name for a sea slug.. These are generally far more beautiful than the slugs in your garden. The one shown here, Facelina auricula feeding on the marine plant/animal Tubularia indivisa, was recently photographed at Ballymacaw by a local diver, Jamie Malone, who is rapidly being recognised as the the marine equal of Ireland's best known photographer of terristrial wildlife, Mike Brown, who does much of his work in Waterford. Just reported by Michael Viney in the Irish Times; at Lismore, Ireland's second largest moth, the African migrant Convolvulus Hawk Moth. This is 4.5cm, long and with a proboscis 7.5cm with which it probes into bell-shaped flowers such as the Nicotiana shown here.

Reported by Tadgh O'Carroll, Clouded Yellow butterflies at Sawleen in late August, at Ardmore Head on the 07th September where "clouds of Clouded Yellows and Silver Y moths coming in from the sea" were reported by members of the Irish Whale and Dolphin group and at Woodstown and Grace Dieu Lower in Waterford City on the following day .

Bizarre!

There is a certain lady named Mary who loves slugs so much that she and her brother feeds them every night.He takes pictures of them!! The slugs shown here are Deroceras reticulatum (Muller 1774) (a common species). The good news is that these are just 40 miles from Waterford AND just outside Waterford City and County! I am informed that they will not eat Italian food like Spaghetti!!!

WWaterford dragonflies are so accommodating, if you want to photograph them, they will land on your finger.

More late lepidoptera -

Another Humming-bird Hawk Moth reported from near Annestown on the 29th October, and a Small Tortoiseshell butterfly flying in a Waterford City garden on the Bank Holiday Monday together with two Herald moths entering a city house looking for safe places to hibernate in for the winter moths.

In the Bulletin of the Irish Bigeographical Soceity (No. 30) just published, are details of a new Fly found at the Blackwater; details of Otters in Waterford City, Kilmacthomas, Ballyduff, the Mahon River, Dunmore East , Tallow, Tallow Bridge and Cappoquin and a map showing that 80 species of Hoverfly have now been recorded in Waterford City and County.

The latest edition of the Irish Naturalists' Journal (Vol. 28.pp 269-308) contains several new records for Waterford - new Flies from Ballinlough, Mahon Falls and Dunhillwith a Chironomidae from Belle Lake: details of a Greater Weever fish from off Mine Head, this being the forth record from Co. Wateford, and the official write-up of the first Irish record of the Chinese Mitten Crab (left) captured on the River Suir near Bellview in January 2006 (see below)

Netted in Waterford City this morning for ringing purposes, this female Goldfinch was already ringed with a closed ring used by illegal trappers. These rings are used on young wild birds when in the nest so that when 'harvested' for cages, they can claim that it was bred in captivity.
